Clarkesworld Magazine

April 26, 2007

The folks at Clarkesworld Magazine have gone insane. Their first act of insanity — publishing one of my stories.

“The First Female President” appears in the April issue of the magazine. And I couldn’t have asked for a cooler cover.

I wrote an earlier version of this story for a contest at the old Hellnotes. I liked what I came up with, even that early crappy version. But after a swift rejection I tossed it to a dark corner of my hard drive and nearly forgot about it. Until that is, a little magazine called Clarkesworld popped up with Nick Mamatas as editor. And then the delusions started. I fantasized about actually selling something to them and finally breaking into a ‘pro-market’. (If you’ve been keeping track, prior to this I had sold a grand whopping total of two stories in my lifetime.) And at 10 cents per word, it was all the more incentive to finally fix that ‘toe story’ (read it.. you’ll see). So after a lot of adding and cutting and adding and polishing and more polishing, i submitted the sucker, those blissful delusions still flying around in my head.

Within a couple days I got the following response from Nick:

“Yes”

Short, but oh so sweet.

So give it a read if you will. And let me know who’s crazier – me or them.
